Testimony of an ex-child soldier
#video#CentralAfricanRepublic
In the Central African Republic, thousands of children have joined violent militias – either by force, or by choice. Since 2013, the country has been locked in civil war, with several disparate groups fighting each other.
Some kids have joined the Christian Anti-balaka group and wear elaborate amulets to protect them against guns. Others fight for Seleka Muslim rebels with AK-47s.
As part of a UNICEF-led effort to free child soldiers over the years, thousands of underage soldiers have left the groups. However, children traumatised by war have to go through a rehabilitation process before going home.
This child who we filmed for Children of the Front shared his memories.

Barbarity or tradition?
#video#theFaroeIslands
On Denmark’s Faroe Islands, pilot whales are slaughtered in a centuries-old tradition called ‘the grind’. The sight is terrifying – the mammals are driven into a bay by small boats and hacked to pieces by a bunch of waiting men, as the water turns red.
Animal rights activists from around the world are calling for an end to be put to the custom, which some say makes the island’s inhabitants ‘Europe’s last barbarians.’ But the islanders say the ‘grind’ is part of their cultural identity. It provides a sense of community… and a source of food. In their defence, the Feroese argue that it would be the same if “cows were killed in a pool.”

Black magic cult or misunderstood religion?
#video#Haiti
Do you know what Voodoo is? For most of us, the word probably conjures up images of voodoo dolls or disturbing rites we’ve seen in movies.
Voodooism has long been stigmatised as a sinister cult with scary rituals that even involve cannibalism. However, the reality is very different. Voodooism, which originated in West Africa, is closely linked to slavery. In the early 18th century, Haitian slaves overthrew their European rulers and took control of the island. Many slaves were Voodooists, so no wonder the cult was banned! Voodooists believe in the spiritual world and worship their ancestors. In the past, they often embraced Catholic symbols of saints to avoid detention and punishment.
In 2003, Voodooism was finally recognised as an official religion in Haiti, on a par with Catholicism and Protestantism.

Volunteers make 1700 dreams come true every year with the Dutch Ambulance Wish Foundations. And they do it all for free!
Want to admire a painting by Rembrandt one last time? Go to a concert by your favourite band? Or see a beautiful lighthouse? Done!
Roel’s dream was to enjoy a sunny day by the sea. In heaven, all they talk about is the ocean, right?

‘Best grave’ championship
#video#Hungary
Ever considered grave-digging as a fun, competitive pastime? At least that’s how the Hungarian Gravediggers’ Association sees it.
Teams race to dig a perfect grave. It has to be exactly 1.6 m deep, 2 m long and 80 cm wide. Surprisingly, competitive grave-digging is quite a sight. Otherwise how would you explain people coming to watch and cheer?

World's most explosive city
#video#Mexico
The city of Tultepec in Mexico is almost literally sitting on a powder keg: three quarters of Tultepec's population work in the fireworks business, and sometimes their pyrotechnics activities cause deadly accidents. However, locals shrug their shoulders and say that it’s the lot of a fireworks maker.
They throw an extravagantly wild, week-long fireworks festival every year. Its highlight is the ‘pamplonada’, or a parade of colourful bull effigies rigged with fireworks. Participants prepare everything themselves - they build bull-shaped floats, paint them and load them with hand-made fireworks. Then they set them on fire to watch sparks fly in every direction as they celebrate the passion and peril of their craft.

Married at 12
#video#Gypsy
Russian Gypsy boys get married when they’re 10 to 12 years old. Girls tie the knot when they’re a bit older, from 15 to 16. The newlyweds are barely acquainted, but they’ll have a lifetime to get to know each other, as adults say. Kids have no say when it comes to choosing their future spouse. The groom's family has to pay a hefty dowry for the bride. A young wife is expected to take care of most of the household chores. Unlike her husband, a Gypsy wife can't work or study. While other Gypsy traditions are fading away, child marriages live on. This is what a Gypsy wedding looks like.

‘Azov came and said: ‘Come to the factory, to the bomb shelter!’. And then they say: 'We're going to die, and all of you will die here with us!'.
Michael, a worker at the Azovstal plant, talks about how the Azov fighters lured people to the facility to use them as human shields. Today, when the Ukrainian media call the surrender of nationalists ‘evacuation’, I want to show them this video. And to convey the words of an Azovstal worker, where his colleagues who were held hostage died: ‘They're not human! They must be exterminated! They don't deserve a trial’.
This is an interview from our new film. The premiere is coming soon.
