Chandra is gazing at a cluster of #galaxies in Virgo. Nearby in the sky is M90, one of the brightest and largest spiral galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. Approximately 59 million light years from Earth, M90 contains about a trillion stars and a thousand globular clusters.
Chandra is studying a Black Hole in Leo. Nearby in the sky is a pair of #galaxies known as Arp 87. Gas, dust, and stars flowing from the larger galaxy have formed an enveloping arm around the smaller companion galaxy.🌀🌀
🌎 Somewhere between 800 million and 2 billion light-years from Earth, astronomers have found the "Giant Arc"—a massive curved structure of galaxies stretching over 3.3 billion light-years. Structures this size challenge standard ideas about the universe’s uniformity, as the Big Bang model predicts matter should be spread more evenly on such large scales. ✨

Today Chandra is gazing at #galaxies in Centaurus. Nearby in the sky is planetary nebula Fleming 1, a glowing cloud of gas around 2 white dwarf stars. In the next 10,000 years or so, Fleming 1 will slowly disperse into #space. The stars will cool & fade away for billions of years.
🪐 The galaxy NGC 1277 in the Perseus constellation harbors an ultramassive black hole that makes up a staggering 14% of its entire mass—a proportion far greater than in any typical galaxy. This enigmatic black hole has puzzled scientists, as such a gigantic ratio defies cosmic norms and hints at a forgotten chapter in the history of galactic evolution. ✨

🪐 The galaxy IC 1101 is one of the largest known galaxies in the universe, stretching about 6 million light-years across—nearly 60 times the diameter of the Milky Way. If you tried to cross IC 1101 at the speed of light, it would still take 6 million years, highlighting just how colossal the distances between and within galaxies can be in the cosmos. ✨

🪐 The Sombrero Galaxy (Messier 104), located about 31 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo, stretches 50,000 light-years across—nearly half the diameter of our Milky Way. Even the fastest spacecraft ever built would need millions of years to traverse a single galaxy like Sombrero, showing how cosmic distances turn entire galaxies into vast, seemingly unreachable islands amid the universe’s dark ocean. ✨

🪐 The James Webb Space Telescope has identified a galaxy named JADES-GS-z13-0, whose light began its journey over 13.4 billion years ago—only about 320 million years after the Big Bang. Observing JADES-GS-z13-0 helps astronomers peer back to the universe’s infancy, revealing what the very first galaxies were like just after cosmic dawn. ✨

🪐 In 2016, astronomers watched the star KSN 2011d in the galaxy UGC 11066 explode as a supernova, capturing the "shock breakout"—a brief burst of light that occurs when the explosion’s blast wave first reaches the star’s surface. This rare observation let scientists directly witness the very instant a star’s core collapse triggers a cosmic explosion, providing clues to the exact sequence of events when massive stars end their lives and enrich their galaxies with newly created elements. ✨

🪐 In 2018, astronomers pinpointed the source of a fast radio burst called FRB 171020 to a spiral galaxy named ESO 601-G036, located about 120 million light-years from Earth. This discovery was surprising because, unlike many other FRBs linked to more active galaxies, ESO 601-G036 is relatively ordinary, showing that these mysterious cosmic flashes can come from the most unexpected corners of the universe. ✨

🪐 In July 2022, astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope identified the galaxy GLASS-z12, one of the most distant objects ever observed, whose light began traveling toward us just 350 million years after the Big Bang. Detecting GLASS-z12 means we are seeing the universe as it was shortly after its birth, providing a rare window into the dawn of cosmic history when the first galaxies were forming. ✨

🪐 The galaxy NGC 2683, sometimes called the "UFO Galaxy," has a dramatic, warped disk that gives it a shape unlike typical spirals. Located about 35 million light-years away in the constellation Lynx, its tilted, edge-on view and slightly twisted arms create the illusion of a flying saucer drifting through space, making it one of the most striking examples of galaxies with unusual forms. ✨
