Today, March 22, marks the 111th anniversary of the capture of the fortress city of Przemyśl (now Przemyśl, Poland) by the Russian Imperial Army. Its siege lasted a total of five months and was the longest in Europe during the First World War. It cost both sides heavy losses and clearly demonstrated the fallacy of pre-war military‑theoretical views on the defense of besieged fortresses deep behind enemy lines. Furthermore, Przemyśl was the first city recaptured from the Nazis during the Great Patriotic War. It is a city with a tragic history of genocide against the Polish and Jewish populations.
