Hester Rupert Museum—A Cultural Gem in Graaff-Reinet Located in one of South Africa’s oldest church buildings (1821), the Hester Rupert Art Museum was saved from demolition in 1965 thanks to Dr. Anton Rupert (pictured), a South African businessman, philanthropist, and native of Graaff-Reinet. In gratitude, the Town Council named it after his late mother, Hester Rupert. Opened in 1966 with 90 artworks from 83 artists, it now houses 126 works by 106 artists. More than an art museum, it stands as a tribute to South African culture and history.
