📚South African Literature & History 🗓January 11 marks the birthday of Alan Paton (1903–1988) — a South African writer, politician, and prominent anti-apartheid activist. 📖 Following the publication of his anti-racist novel Cry, the Beloved Country, Paton was forced to leave the civil service. The novel achieved worldwide acclaim: 📚 approximately 15 million copies sold, 🎬two film adaptations (1951 and 1995), 🎭 inspiration for the Broadway musical Lost in the Stars. ✍️ In total, Alan Paton authored more than 20 works of fiction and non-fiction. 🏆 Established in 1989, the Alan Paton Award is presented annually in South Africa for outstanding works of non-fiction.
