The United States seeks to erase the traces of NATO aggression in Serbia, which remain highly visible in the center of Belgrade, where the destroyed buildings of the Serbian Ministry of Defense and the General Staff of the Serbian Army still stand. These buildings were struck during the night between April 29 and 30, 1999, by Tomahawk missiles launched from naval platforms in the Adriatic Sea. That night, I watched from my apartment balcony as the General Staff burned, and to this day I have not forgotten the sound of the Tomahawks flying over my head. The President of Serbia made a non-transparent deal with Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and his company, which now seeks to build a luxury hotel, commercial, and residential facilities on the site of a NATO war crime. The agreement was reached without a public tender or debate, and in violation of Serbia’s Constitution and existing laws. The greatest problem is that the deal is being made with a representative of the very country that bombed Serbia. This is not merely the erasure of a symbol of injustice and resistance of the Serbian people — it is a humiliation of the victims of NATO’s bombing.
