Pancras, born in Phrygia of a noble family, went to Rome as a young boy of fourteen under the emperors Diocletian and Maximian. There baptized by the Roman Pontiff and instructed in the Christian faith, shortly after he was arrested for the same; but constantly refusing to sacrifice to idols, presented the head with virile courage, he carried the glorious crown of martyrdom. The matron Octavia took his body at night, and, embalming him, buried him on the Via Aurelia.

Flavia Domitilla, a Roman virgin, granddaughter of the emperors Titus and Domitian, having received the veil of virginity from Pope Clement, was denounced as a Christian by Aurelianus, her fiancé, son of the consul Titus Aurelius, whereby she was relegated by the emperor Domitian to the island of Ponza, where he suffered a long martyrdom in prison. Finally led to Terracina, she confessed Christ again, and appearing ever more constant and having converted many to the faith of Christ with doctrine and miracles, the judge set fire to her home, and thus ended the course of her glorious martyrdom together. with the virgins Theodora and Euphrosina, her milk sisters, under the emperor Trajan on 7 May: their bodies, found intact, were buried by the deacon Cesarius. This day then the sacred relics of the two brothers, together with those of Flavia Domitilla, from the diaconia of St. Adrian were solemnly transferred to the basilica of these Martyrs, under the title of Fasciola - their ancient Title restored again -, where once stored they were kept, by order of Pope Clement VIII, who then established that today wold be celebrated the feast of the same blessed Virgin Domitilla, whose passion is commemorated on the seventh of this month.

THE SAINT MARTYRS NEREUS, ACHILLEUS, VIRGIN DOMITILLA AND PANCRAS Today Holy Church offers the Sacrifice in memory of four holy martyrs of the Roman Church: Nereus, Achilleus, [Flavia] Domitilla and Pancras. Nereus and Achilleus, brothers, eunuch servans of Flavia Domitilla, baptised who were with St. Peter with her and Plautilla, mother of her and sisters of the saint Martyr Flavius Clemens Consul, they persuaded Domitilla to consecrate her virginity to God; wherefore accused as Christians by her fiancé, Aurelianus, they gloriously confessed their faith and were relegated to the island of Ponza, where they were again subjected to torture and beaten with rods; then led to Terracina, and be tormented by Minucius Rufus Consular with rack and fire, but constantly declaring that, baptized by St. Peter the Apostle, no torment could force them to sacrifice to idols, they had their heads cut off. Their bodies brought to Rome by Auspicius, their disciple and tutor of Domitilla, were buried on the Via Ardeatina.

“A deceased Benedictine nun appeared in glory to a certain person, and said, that she was in Heaven, and in the enjoyment of perfect happiness; but that, if she could desire anything, it would be to return to life, and to suffer affliction, in order to merit an increase of glory. And she added, that, to acquire the glory which corresponded to a single ‘Ave Maria,’ she would be content to suffer till the day of judgement, the long and painful sickness which brought her to death.” — St Alphonsus Liguori

A very strict observant of regular discipline with himself, he never ate meat, except seriously ill. He slept on the ground or on the bare plank. He always wore a cilice, and often added an iron belt over his bare skin, and always kept the most intact virginity. In giving advices he was of so much wisdom to be named with common praise “Antoninus of the counsel”. Humility shone so much in him that, even the local and provincial superior, he carried out the lowest offices of the monastery with the greatest solicitude. Promoted by Eugene IV to the archbishopric of Florence in 1446, he finally consented, but with great regret and only under the threat of apostolic penalties if he did not accept. It is not possible to say how much prudence, piety, charity, gentleness and priestly zeal shone in the new office. Admirable was the power of his ingenuity that he learned almost all the sciences very well without any teacher. Finally, after so much effort, after having also published many excellent books for doctrine, received the Holy Eucharist and the Extreme Unction, embraced the image of the Crucifix, he saw a happy death on the 2nd of May 1459 at Montughi, a hill inhabited just north of Florence, near Careggi, in the so-called Palazzo dei Vescovi Fiorentini. Illustrious for miracles in life and after death, it was inscribed in the number of Saints by Hadrian VI, on May 31 in the year of the Lord 1523.

SAINT ANTONINUS, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR Antoninus Pierozzi, born in Florence in 1389 from honest parents, already since childhood he gave a notable indication of future sanctity. At 16 years old, embraced the Order of the Preachers, from then he started to shine of the greatest virtues. He declared perpetual war against sloth. In the night, after a short sleep, it was the first at the office of the morning, finished that, he employed the rest of the night in prayer or certainly in reading and compose books; and, if sometimes an importunate sleep surprised his weary limbs, he would lean his head against the wall for a moment and then, shaking from sleep, immediately resumed the holy vigils with more ardour.
