His relics, in 842, were brought to Gaeta to escape the Saracen danger, and were found in 917. Paschal II, in 1106, dedicated the Cathedral of Gaeta under his name. In the Middle Ages the saint was counted among the so-called Holy Helpers and especially invoked against epidemics, while sailors venerate him as patron with the name of Saint Elmo.
