SAINT EPHREM THE SYRIAN, DEACON, CONFESSOR AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH Ephrem, of Syrian nationality, born in Nisibis (eastern Syria) around 306, from a pagan father and an idolatrous priest, he was thrown out of his home for his inclinations toward Christianity. The wanderer, perhaps fifteen, found shelter with the bishop of Nisibis, Jacob (or James), by whom he was baptized at the age of 18. In short, he made such progress in science and holiness that he was made master of the flourishing school of Nisibis, a city of Mesopotamia, and became the, very good, assistant of the Nisiben bishops.
