Many Armenians in Mexico worked as shoemakers, a skill taught in orphanages set up after the 1915-18 Ottoman Genocide. The first Armenians in Mexico City are recorded in the 1720s. They came as merchants from Isfahan, Iran via the Manila Galleon trade that connected the Philippines to Acapulco. Their descendants assimilated into Mexican society.
