✨New talk alert ✨ Lecture by Nini Palavandishvili Friday, 4th November 19:30 135 Davit Aghemashenebeli Avenue, Tbilisi Soviet mosaics have become such an indivisible part of our daily visual culture that we hardly notice them anymore, or neglect them to the extent that we paint or glue adverts over them. The monumental-decorative art of the Soviet period is mostly linked to ideological propaganda, such as the friendship of nations, the victory of the proletariat in the struggle for socialism, the expansion of industrial society, and urbanisation. However, the iconography of mosaics in Georgia exemplifies how the standards set for characters and themes were treated locally, away from the regulating centre. The iconography of cultural, educational, industrial, or independent structures is saturated with the pictorial presentation of common familiar or national symbols and depicts saints, heroes, fables, and symbolic representation of similar themes. Today, many of them are facing the threat of obliteration, and some have already been destroyed. Unfortunately, we cannot talk about political will in a broader sense, any intervention from the professional community, or public interest with regard to conserving them. Nini Palavandishvili is a curator, researcher, and writer. Her focus is on Mid-century modernist architecture, monumental and decorative art, their role in a time of creation, and current interpretations. https://fb.me/e/4kPLcXN4k
