[Sent by Gov.sg – 16 Nov 2023] Police Alert - New Phishing Scam on WhatsApp • When using online search engines, the query “WhatsApp Web” may produce returns that include links to fake websites. • When victims click to access a fake website and scan the QR code provided, this allows a scammer to log into the victim’s WhatsApp account from a new linked device. • Scammers then impersonate victims & ask the victims’ contacts for transfer of monies or personal/banking details. 1️⃣ADD security to your use of WhatsApp by enabling the ‘Two-Step Verification’ feature. Activate your notifications to be alerted to changes to linked devices. 2️⃣CHECK that you are using the official WhatsApp Web website - https://web.whatsapp.com. Check your “Settings” for unauthorised linked devices.
