In elections, leading and trailing are the terms often used in 'poling' regarding the number of votes. To understand this let's consider two political parties. Party - A and Party - B. Now let's consider following votes for both the parties: Party -A: 597 votes Party -B: 700 votes. As we can easily interpret Party-B recieved more votes, so it becomes the leading part**y. And subsequently B becomes a **trailing party. A leading party has: 1. More percentage of total votes 2. More number of seats won in a legislative election A trailing party has: 1. Less percentage of total votes. 2. Less/No seats won in an legislative election The trailing and leading pattern is often addressed in terms of percentages. Like- "Candidate A is leading in the polls with only 53% of the vote".
