In 2004, Peader Tóibín campaigned against the referendum on birthright citizenship, claiming most people on the doors opposed it because Irish people had "a great ability to relate the the new immigrant population." 79% of voters subsequently voted to pass the referendum, removing the constitutional right for foreign women to give birth in Ireland and claim Irish citizenship for their child.
