checkout the app INCI beauty, you can scan the code on various hygiene products. The ingredients are color coded, with descriptions and links as to why something was labeled for example as red, which is used for the most harmful substances. You can see peoples comments and suggestions for similar products with higher points. Maximum number of points is 20, each bad or potentially bad ingredient takes away point. I guess anything above 15 points is not so bad. Some people say that the app is too strict on some ingredients. As always as you say its best to research everything yourself, but its a nice app and can help.
