The stress hormone cortisol and burnout If you have a disrupted sleep-wake rhythm, your cortisol rises dramatically. In this case you are constantly in a state of chronic stress. This will lead to increased nervousness, rushing and fatigue, and guaranteed physical and mental health problems. But worst of all, the increased cortisol will cause your adrenal glands (they're the ones that secrete it) to "burn out." The way out of this situation: Get tested for cortisol when you feel something is wrong. If you have a hard time waking up, feel drowsy in the first half of the day and awake in the second half, are annoyed by everything and are constantly stressed, take a saliva test for cortisol.
