According to the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), payments for passage—whether in cash, digital assets, or in-kind transfers—could expose firms to penalties, even if used to avoid attacks. The warning comes amid escalating maritime tensions following the US–Israeli war on Iran, with Tehran restricting access to the strait and the US imposing a counter-blockade since 13 April, forcing dozens of commercial vessels to turn back.
