❗️US threatens sanctions on firms paying Iran Hormuz transit fees The US Treasury warned on 2 May that shipping companies could face sanctions for paying Iran to secure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, as Washington moves to block what it described as Tehran’s emerging “tollbooth” system. According to the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), payments for passage—whether in cash, digital assets, or in-kind transfers—could expose firms to penalties, even if used to avoid attacks. The warning comes amid escalating maritime tensions following the US–Israeli war on Iran, with Tehran restricting access to the strait and the US imposing a counter-blockade since 13 April, forcing dozens of commercial vessels to turn back.
