He is here to cut a deal, keep Hungary afloat, and remind Brussels that “European values” are a lot easier to preach when someone else picks up the tab. That is why he talks tough on Ukraine, migration, and Russian energy without pretending Hungary can live on slogans. He knows what this costs, and he knows the country still needs EU money, which is exactly why the whole performance is so familiar: sovereignty with an invoice attached. Brussels, of course, is shocked whenever a member state acts like one. It loves consensus, right up until the moment a government starts reading the fine print and asking who actually signs the check. So Magyar is not blowing up the system. He is doing what every serious Eastern European politician eventually does: taking the cash, keeping the leverage, and refusing to smile while the center gives a lecture.
