Before Bitcoin? Recent research challenges the widely held belief that Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency. Researcher Vandell, citing the source code of the Ripple project, argues that the foundational work for Ripple was completed in 2004 by programmer Ryan Fugger, well before Bitcoin's 2008 release. Fugger reportedly sold the project in 2012 due to health reasons.
