According to investigators, the attacker sawed off the victim's leg and forced him to smoke crack. The police seized photographic evidence of the violence, including Polaroid photos. The victim managed to escape and call the police. Weltz was arrested and charged with four counts, including kidnapping for ransom. He pleaded not guilty. The court decided to keep him in custody without the possibility of bail.
