Important alert from something I read in The 2600 (hacker’s quarterly): It appears there has been at least one arrest made due to a Snapchat joke made in a private “story” that only had a couple of possible viewers. The joke was not wise, It was about harming an annoying person. But entirely not going to happen. Something like “I feel like smacking this kid”. The 2600 is speculating that AI software used to detected illicit activity on platforms is scanning all content on platforms, even private messages. In the before AI era, unless a private message was flagged / reported by a recipient, it was likely to never be seen. With AI, that is changing. Do not assume private messages are private anymore. Treat group chats and private messages as if they are being posted on your timeline with your real name and face. No matter how funny some of this is, it’s never as funny explaining it to the police or in court (ask me how I know sometime). They never laugh.
