On 23 March 2026, Ambassador of Russia to South Africa Roman Ambarov attended a Day of Reflection on Resistance and Liberation Heritage in commemoration of the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale at Freedom Park in Pretoria.
The keynote address was delivered by Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture of South Africa, Hon. Ms Peace Mabe. Among the participants were Hon. Ms Nomvula Mokonyane, First Deputy Secretary-General of the African National Congress, as well as heads of diplomatic missions from Cuba, Angola, and Namibia, ANC representatives, and veterans of the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale.
🎙 Addressing the participants, Ambassador Roman Ambarov emphasized that the Battle of #CuitoCuanavalewasa turning pointof the Civil War in Angola.
The victory of the People’s Armed Forces of Liberation of Angola contributed directly to the peace process in Namibia and helped pave the way for the eventual liberation of South Africa.
“Cuito Cuanavale became a symbol of resistance against oppression. It demonstrated that even in the face of overwhelming force, the determination of people fighting for their rights cannot be defeated. It was here that the tide began to turn - not only in Angola, but across the region.
The role played by the Soviet Union in supporting Angola during this difficult period remains an important part of this history. Through the various means of assistance and political support, it contributed to strengthening the defence of Angola’s sovereignty. Soviet advisers worked alongside Angolan and Cuban forces, sharing knowledge, resources, and a belief in a just cause.
But what truly defined this moment was solidarity to fight together against the colonial yoke. It was the understanding that the struggle of one people is the concern of all humanity. The fight in Angola echoed the voices of those resisting apartheid in South Africa and colonial rule in Namibia. It was one struggle, fought on many fronts,” the Russian Ambassador said.
As part of the event, Roman Ambarov laid wreath to the Russian section of the Wall of Names in memory of Soviet military specialists who participated in conflicts in Southern Africa.
ℹ️ The Battle of Cuito Cuanavale (August 1987 – March 1988) was a decisive engagement of the Angolan Civil War and a crucial step in the struggle for independence of the countries of Southern Africa from colonialism and apartheid. During the battle, the People’s Armed Forces of Liberation of Angola backed by #USSR, #Cuba, People’s Liberation Army of #Namibia, African National Congress (#ANC) and others defeated the combatants of the Angolan “UNITA” party and the racist regime of the Republic of South Africa supported by the US.

Ручка была необходима как физическое доказательство реальности всех тех историй о необычайном мире запредельного - о загранице и зарубежной массовой культуре - которыми щедро делился наш герой с соседями по палате после отбоя.
О космической саге про рыцарей джедаев, странствующих по далеким галактикам, о музыкантах группы, подлинных лиц которых никто не видел, об удивительном актере, боевым навыкам которого нет равных… и многом другом, упоительно прекрасном и недоступном. И в ожидании послания от отца он рисовал в воображении, как изумятся его товарищи, увидев своими глазами волшебную авторучку.
Но папа просьбу своего отпрыска оставил без ответа…

Многие знают картину арт-группы Doping Pong «Затерянный мир», посвященную ТВ-передаче «Ленин-гриб». Но мало кто знает, что первоначально эта картина задумывалась совсем иначе.
Действие происходит не в глухих джунглях, а в солнечном саду. И вместо Ленина должна была быть скульптура юной пионерки, читающей книгу. А из книги должны были расти не светящиеся грибы, а живые цветы. Это была романтическая история, которая трансформировалась в посвящение Сергею Курехину. В новой версии мы вернулись к своей изначальной задумке.
Как сказала владелица картины, увидев результат: «Что должно явиться миру - рано или поздно явится».

On the occasion of the Russian #DiplomatsDay (February 10) we would like to tell you about the Contribution of Soviet Diplomacy to the Establishment of the #UN
Key points:
- At the #Moscow Conference of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the USSR, USA, Great Britain and China in October 1943, the #Soviet delegation put forward a proposal to establish a universal international organization.
- The first draft of the #UNCharter was developed at a conference convened at the suggestion of the #USSR in Dumbarton Oaks (#USA) from September 21 to October 7, 1944. At this forum, representatives of the USSR, the USA, #GreatBritain and #China agreed on the goals, structure and functions of the world organization. The Soviet delegation consistently and resolutely advocated that the activities of this organization be based on democratic principles.
- At the #Crimea (Yalta) Conference of the leaders of the great powers, which took place from 4 to 11 February 1945, participants agreed upon the issues of the initial members of the organization and the voting procedure in the Security Council, as well as on issues related to the maintenance of international peace and security, the development of economic relations, cooperation in the social, technical and other areas of interstate relations.
- On April 25 – June 26, 1945, the founding conference of the United Nations was held in #SanFrancisco. The Soviet delegation sought to ensure that the #democratic principles of the structure and activities of the UN were enshrined in the Charter.
- Based on Soviet amendments, important new provisions were included in the chapter on the purposes and principles of the UN, stating that peaceful settlement of international disputes should be carried out "in accordance with the principles of justice and international law"; that friendly relations between nations should develop "on the basis of respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples"; that international cooperation in resolving international problems of an economic, social, cultural and humanitarian nature should be carried out "and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion...".
- On June 26, 1945, the UN Charter was signed by A.A. Gromyko, then the Soviet Ambassador to the USA, thanks to whose personal participation and persistence the final documents related to the creation of the UN recorded positions largely corresponding to the interests of the Soviet Union.

Новая картина арт-группы Doping Pong посвящена самым благодарным зрителям фильма - юным пионерам, устроившим разборки, кто сильнее - современные пираты или советские моряки, прямо в кинозале во время сеанса, на который они пришли уже в двадцатый раз.
Фильм «Пираты XX века» стал абсолютным кассовым лидером советского кинопроката: к 1990 году ленту посмотрело 120 миллионов человек. Школьники ходили на него целыми классами. Фанатично, многократно и год за годом: с самой премьеры в 1980-м, еще учениками начальной школы, и до 1990-го, уже на пороге взрослой жизни. Можно сказать, что именно этот фильм взрастил и изменил целое поколение 80-х годов. А поколение, которое выросло на фильме, затем в 90-х изменило и страну по образу и подобию игр в темном зале кинотеатра – причисляя себя к Пиратам или Морякам.
