🌐UN Moves to Centralize Global AI Governance The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution creating the Global Dialogue on AI Governance and an international scientific panel on AI. The forum will convene UN member states annually to address the development of “safe, secure and trustworthy” AI, with a focus on transparency, accountability, and human oversight in line with international law. By embedding principles such as interoperability and compatibility into its mandate, the UN is signaling that AI governance cannot remain fragmented. For policymakers and industry leaders alike, the establishment of this forum represents a shift: AI will now be subject not only to national and regional frameworks but to global coordination under the UN’s umbrella. #UN#AIgovernance

UN Aims to Regulate AI in Warfare: Safeguarding Peace and Security Hello AI & Law community! We've got some important news from the United Nations regarding the use of AI in warfare. During the first UN Security Council meeting dedicated to artificial intelligence, Secretary-General António Guterres reaffirmed his commitment to regulate the sector, especially its use during armed conflicts. He emphasized the potential catastrophic consequences of malicious AI use for terrorist, criminal, or state purposes, which could lead to unimaginable destruction and widespread trauma. The UN aims to create an international body, a consultative council, to help govern AI usage globally and issue regulatory proposals and recommendations to UN member states. This comes amidst ongoing regulatory efforts, like the EU's AI Act. The focus within the UN is on armed conflicts, and by 2026, they plan to have an agreement banning the use of AI in automated weapons systems. The goal is to prevent the delegation of lethal decision-making to AI on the battlefield. However, there's also a recognition of AI's potential positive role. The UK's Foreign Affairs Minister, James Cleverly, acknowledged the moral questions raised by using AI in warfare but highlighted the potential of AI to help address proliferation issues and contribute to peaceful endeavors. #AIandLaw#UN#ArtificialIntelligence#AIRegulation#GlobalAIInitiative
