Shirley Ann Jackson was the first Black woman to earn a doctorate from MIT. Her research at Bell Labs contributed to inventions like caller ID, call waiting, and fiber-optic cables. She also served as head of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission under President Clinton. She was also the first Black woman to lead a major technological institute as president of RPI.
