Under-5 year old deaths dropped from 12.8 million (1990) to 4.8 million (2023). Neonatal deaths fell from 5.2 million to 2.3 million. Progress slowed since 2015. Most deaths happen in sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia. Main causes: infections, birth problems, and poor care.
