Earth’s spin slows down due to the Moon’s pull. Leap seconds are added occasionally, about every few years, to keep clocks accurate. Since around 2026 years ago, roughly 1,400 leap seconds or about 23 minutes have been added to account for the gradual slowing of Earth’s rotation, making a year effectively 23 minutes longer since then.
