Color facts: Tyrian Purple was once worth more than gold. It was made from sea snails. About 10,000 snails were needed to make 1 gram of dye. It was reserved for royalty. Ultramarine Blue was made from lapis lazuli mined in Afghanistan. The stone had to be processed to remove tiny blue particles. In Renaissance Europe, it was sometimes more expensive than gold by weight. Vermilion was made from mercury sulfide, also called cinnabar. It was a bright red pigment used in paintings and manuscripts. Cochineal Red was made from dried insects. Spain controlled its trade during the colonial era. Scheele’s Green and Paris Green contained arsenic. They were toxic and caused poisoning. Indian Yellow was said to be made from cow urine from mango-fed cattle.
