The first alarm clock could only ring at 4 a.m. In 1787, American clockmaker Levi Hutchins invented the first personal mechanical alarm clock in Concord, New Hampshire, designed solely to ring at 4 a.m. It was built for his own strict work schedule to ensure he never overslept.
