Mark Twain (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910) bought his first typewriter in 1874 but quickly gave up on it in 1875, saying it made him want to swear. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was handwritten. In 1883, Life on the Mississippi was created from Twain’s dictation, typed out by a typist. The claim it was the “first-ever typewritten manuscript” is often repeated, but it isn’t firmly established or verified.
