On April 24, 1915, Ottoman authorities arrested Armenian leaders. Between 800,000 and 1.2 million Armenians were forced on death marches to the Syrian Desert, facing starvation, violence, and massacres. By 1916, about 200,000 survived. Many women and children were forced to convert to Islam. The killings and ethnic cleansing continued through the Turkish War of Independence, ending around 1923.
