Coal miners once used canaries to detect deadly gases like carbon monoxide. The birds reacted quickly by becoming sick or collapsing before humans noticed danger, warning miners to escape. Some mines used “canary resuscitators,” small cages that supplied oxygen to revive the birds after gas exposure.
