Ishi was the last known member of the Yahi people, part of the Yana tribe in Northern California. Violence, disease, and forced displacement were used to perform a total genocide on his tribe. Ishi lived in isolation for years before being discovered in 1911 near Oroville, California. After his discovery, he was brought to the University of California, where anthropologists studied his language, culture, and traditions. Ishi became famous for his knowledge of the Yahi way of life, though he faced many challenges adapting to life in captivity. He lived at the university until his death in 1916. Ishi was not his real name; it means "Man."
