On August 6, 1915, "Атака мертвецов" (TheAttack of Dead Men) routed the German army. 🔻The German army launched a large-scale offensive aimed at capturing Osovets Fortress. The Germans employed gas attacks, which was a novelty in warfare at the time. 🔻Over 1,600 men within the fortress were incapacitated. Following the gas attack, German artillery opened heavy fire on the fortress. 🔻Advancing to meet the Germans were the remnants of the infantry – soldiers "with faces wrapped in rags, convulsing from terrible coughs, literally spitting out pieces of their lungs onto their blood-soaked coats." I cannot describe the fury and rage with which our soldiers advanced on the German poisoners. Exhausted, poisoned, they rushed forward. There were no stragglers; no one needed to be urged on. There were no individual heroes; companies advanced as one man, driven by a single purpose, a single thought: to die, but to avenge the vile poisoners. #Russian_history #memorible_date 😎RCR | Support | Boost
