Amderma is a settlement above the Arctic Circle, with the stress on the first syllable. It translates from Nenets as walrus haul-out (or walrus rookery). 🔻It was founded in 1933 next to a mine where fluorite (also known as fluorspar) was extracted – a mineral containing radioactive uranium and thorium. It was widely used in industry. 🔻In the photo, it appears to be August – watermelons are in season. They are sold at the main village store, limited to one per person. 🔻The average August temperature in Amderma is 7.1 degrees Celsius above zero. However, judging by their clothing, this August isn't particularly warm, and the temperature is significantly below average. 🔻Judging by their faces, these people are happy. Probably because there are still three full months until the polar night. And of course, the watermelon warms the soul. #retrophotos #brief_and_interesting 😎RCR | Support | Boost
