👋Доброе утро! Maslenitsa Week has officially started in Russia today!🥞 • Масленичная неделя (femin.) [mas-li-nich-na-ya ni-de-lya] 🔻Today, February 16th, marks the beginning of Maslenitsa — the most delicious week of the year! For the next seven days, Russians will be saying goodbye to winter and hello to spring with mountains of blini. ❤️🔥Each day on Maslenitsa Week has its own name: 👍Monday — Встреча (The Meeting) The week kicks off with families coming together. In old Rus' people used to start making the straw effigy of winter (which would be burned on Sunday), and bake the very first pancakes. The first pancake was never eaten — it was given to the poor or left on the window to honor ancestors . 👍Tuesday — Заигрыши (Flirting/Game Day) This was all about matchmaking and finding love! Young people would go sledding together, visit each other for pancakes, and couples who formed this week could get married after Easter. 👍Wednesday — Лакомка (Gourmet Day) Time for sons-in-law to visit their mothers-in-law for pancakes! The more pancakes they ate, the happier their marriage would be. Тёщи really knew how to feed their зятья . 👍Thursday — Разгуляй (Wide Thursday) This was when Узкая Масленица (Narrow Maslenitsa) ended and Широкая Масленица (Wide Maslenitsa) began — meaning all work stops and pure fun begins! Think fist fights, snow fort battles, sledding, bonfires, and enough pancakes to feed an army. Staying home alone was considered bad luck . 👍Friday — Тёщины вечерки (Mother-in-Law's Parties) Now sons-in-law had to invite their mothers-in-law over and treat them to pancakes! 👍Saturday — Золовкины посиделки (Sister-in-Law Gatherings) Young wives invited their husband's sisters over for pancakes and gifts. 👍Sunday — Проводы / Прощёное воскресенье (Farewell / Forgiveness Sunday) Everyone asks for forgiveness (Прости меня), replies with Бог простит (God forgives). Then, the winter effigy is ceremonially burned, ashes used to be scattered over fields for good harvest, and everyone prepares for Lent starting Monday . 🔥Fun Fact: Maslenitsa is also called Сырная седмица (Cheese Week) because Orthodox Christians stop eating meat but can still enjoy dairy, eggs, and fish before Великий пост (Lent) begins . So, how many Russian pancakes are you going to eat this week?🥞 🔻How to say sorry in Russian #holidays #russian_culture 🟠RCR | Support | Boost
