The Griboyedov Canal is one of the oldest in Saint Petersburg! 🔻Originally, the canal was called the Catherine Canal, after Empress Catherine II, during whose reign it was constructed. 🔻In 1923, the canal was renamed Griboyedov Canal, after the writer Alexander Griboyedov, and later simply the Griboyedov Canal. 🔻The renaming was part of a general Soviet-era policy aimed at replacing names associated with the Tsarist family with those of figures from Russian culture. 🔻Alexander Sergeyevich Griboyedov did indeed live in one of the houses along the canal's embankment, which likely served as the main reason for choosing his name for the renaming.
