Pushkin House book prize, that awards the best non-fiction writings about Russia, and of which I have this year the honour of being a jury member, has published a judges' short list. It's a 10th anniversary of the prize, and a it's real marvel of bravery and dedication that the Pushkin house was able to carry on in 2022. On the list are many dear friends and favorite authors, although a judge is not supposed to air one's predilections in public (waiving a kiss, however, to Maria Stepanova and In Memory of Memory). The final winner will be declared later in September: some time left to read the listed books!

The independent student anti-war publication Doxa has been on our minds a lot these past few weeks. We share translations of moving statements by the four student journalists from Doxa who have been sentenced to two years' corrective labour for a 3-min video on protesting rights in today's newsletter. “I won’t talk about the case, the searches, the interrogations, the tomes, the trials. It’s boring and pointless. Recently I’ve joined the school of tiredness and frustration. But even before the arrest, I managed to join the school of being able to talk about truly important things." https://mailchi.mp/37a55c005090/journalists-speak-to-the-world?e=5a3da35b35

The Feminist Anti-War Resistance group in Russia was created in response to the war in Ukraine. This week we had the pleasure of hosting the group's representative in London Ella Rossman in a panel discussion about the nature of anti-war protests in Russia. For our latest newsletter we have also translated a text by one of the founders of the movement who talks about her moving project recording the dreams of those living in Russia in context of the war. https://mailchi.mp/eb3ea88b960b/dreams-about-putin?e=c4fabf5cf6

In this week's newsletter we share the acclaimed Russian writer Mikhail Shishkin's opinion piece on the war in Ukraine and put a spotlight on Serhii Plokhii's Lost Kingdom, a truly illuminating read in context of Russia's war in Ukraine. ‘Do a dictatorship and a dictator give birth to a slave population or does a slave population give birth to a dictatorship and a dictator? The chicken and the egg. How can this vicious circle be broken? How can a new Russia begin?’ - writes Mikhail Shishkin in this week’s Opinion piece for the Guardian. His poignant questions resonate as much now as they did back in 2014 when he came to talk about Russia’s literary and political landscape at Pushkin House.
