Smiling icebreaker #photo#Russia The Yamal icebreaker had its trademark smile whitened during a repair. The Yamal’s smile first appeared in 1994, when the icebreaker performed humanitarian children’s cruises. But, over the years, the smile has worn out. The ship powered by two nuclear reactors is one of the world’s most powerful icebreakers. When fully loaded with 500 kg of nuclear material, she can operate for up to five years without a refuel. The Yamal cuts through 6-metre thick ice like a knife through butter. It’s truly enormous, more than 147 metres long and 30 metres wide! The ‘Yamal’ is named after the Yamal Peninsula in Russia, and it translates as ‘end of the earth’. And the ship can only traverse the cold waters, so its reactors don’t overheat.
