The large bird was once a common sight in China, the Korean Peninsula, Japan and Russia, its shape was deeply rooted in Asian culture. However, the population declined dramatically, and the species vanished from Korea, Russia and Japan. In the 1980s, Chinese conservation experts searched for the crested ibises in the Qinling Mountains and found the last seven of the species. The crested ibis is now on the road to recovery.
