#photo#India On this day, 74 years ago, Mahatma Gandhi was fatally shot in Delhi. A Hindu zealot killed India’s most revered leader. A year before Gandhi’s assassination, India won its independence from Britain but was partitioned into Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan. Religious violence immediately broke out. Gandhi appealed for peace by fasting and praying. Gandhi’s killer, Nathuram Godse, accused the ‘Father of the Nation’ of having betrayed Hindus by being too tolerant to Muslims and blamed the bloodshed on Gandhi.
