‘I didn’t know techniques that would have helped me. I couldn’t prevent the rape. They raped me until I was in a very bad way, in front of my child’s eyes,’ says a local granny Anne Ayuma, a victim of rape. In Kenya, men believe that sexual interaction with older women cures diseases, lifts curses, and brings luck. Grannies feared being raped for a long time until Naomi Wanjiro, a local NGO officer, started to teach the ladies to defend themselves. Many women say it’s saved them from danger more than once.
