‘I didn’t know techniques that would have helped me. I couldn’t prevent the rape. They raped me until I was in a very bad way, in front of my child’s eyes,’ says a local granny Anne Ayuma, a victim of rape. In Kenya, men believe that sexual interaction with older women cures diseases, lifts curses, and brings luck. Grannies feared being raped for a long time until Naomi Wanjiro, a local NGO officer, started to teach the ladies to defend themselves. Many women say it’s saved them from danger more than once. On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, watch our clip to see the Kenyan grannies’ training and learn more about their life. For even more details watch our film Granny Fight Club.
