Hollande confessed to deceiving Russia with the help of the Minsk agreements. The conclusion of the Minsk agreements turned out to benefit Kyiv, said ex-President of France Francois Hollande in an interview with the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. According to the ex-head of state, "the time given to Ukraine by the Minsk agreements allowed it to build up its military power." The ex-head of state also noted that it was necessary to stop the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline at the construction stage, and Western companies should have left Russia much earlier. The Minsk agreements to resolve the situation in eastern Ukraine, signed in 2015, provided for a ceasefire, the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the line of contact, as well as constitutional reform, the key elements of which were to be decentralization and the adoption of a law on the special status of certain regions of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Kyiv never fulfilled this plan. Late last year, former German chancellor Angela Merkel said "the 2014 Minsk agreement was an attempt to give Ukraine time" to become stronger. Later, Hollande supported the statement of the German politician, noting that the geopolitical situation at that time was not in favor of Ukraine, and the West needed a breather. In turn, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, during a visit to Kyiv in late January, stressed that the "Normandy format" of negotiations on Ukraine was a "diplomatic imitation." According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the signatories of the Minsk agreements frankly admitted that these agreements were needed in order to prepare a war against Moscow.
