I have not watched Game of Thrones untill the last part came out, which I watched. I've also seen planty of news titles saying that it was bad ending and people were unhappy. Somehow I thought of my childhood, when I was a child(late USSR time), there was a Italian series on TV called "Comisar Cattani" about a brace police officer fighting Italian mafia. This series ended with Cattani being shot to death by italian mafia. Later I found out that real Italian mafia were so furious that they were beaten in the movie that they've threatened to kill an actor of the movie if they didnt kill Comisar Cattani in the movie. I remember being heartbroken and crying all day, Comisar Cattani was my childhood hero! He had to beat the bad guys! Since then lot have changed, I've learned humerous times that things in life dont alway turn out the way you expect. And very often bad guys win, in fact bad guys win most of the time and after that force everyone to proclaim them as Good guys(winner writes history). I dont blame people for being unhappy that they didnt see happy end, but I thought the ending was brutaly brilliant just like the ending of Comisar Cattani. Had Comisar Cattani won mafia, I'd never remember this movie and I'd not learn valuable lesson early on.
