🏄♂️ Data Analytics in Surfing: A Startup Combining Hobby and Work Today, I want to talk about a unique startup that combines data analytics, machine learning, and surfing. Most of its employees are surfer-data specialists who merge their hobby (surfing) with remote data work. Surfline is a company founded by American surfer Sean Collins. Its mission is to help surfers catch the perfect waves. 500K+ downloads on Google Play 7M+ visits to the website monthly I use Surfline myself to check how good the surfing conditions are on any given day. For example, if the conditions are "Poor," there are no waves, or the waves are too high, it's not a good day to surf, and it's better to plan something else. How does the company forecast surfing conditions? Three key points: 👉 Data Collection. Information is gathered from ocean buoys, weather stations, and satellites. 👉Modeling. Initially, Sean Collins made forecasts based on what he could calculate on paper. Modern models involve billions of calculations, considering thousands of different variables. These models are constantly improving. 👉Visualization. The collected information is translated into "surfer language" and visualized as dashboards on the website and in the app (see screenshot). This startup is an inspiring example of how data can improve the quality of life. It also shows that work and hobbies can coexist harmoniously when you build a career around your interests. If you find this content useful, hit 🔥.

👨💻 Working from the Beach and Hot Data Analyst Jobs in Thailand I'm starting a series of posts about where and how to work as a data analyst abroad. The first country on the list is Thailand, where I currently live. Thailand actively hires foreigners and offers work visas. A few facts: ➡️ Many international companies have headquarters in Thailand. ➡️ Thailand attracts IT expats, creating a multinational and innovative environment. ➡️ Digital nomads love Thailand for its fast internet and low cost of living. ➡️ In many IT companies, the working language is English, which is convenient for expats. Thailand is also a very friendly country. Key employers in Thailand that hire foreigners: 〰Agoda: A popular online hotel and flight booking company with competitive prices. Over 4000 employees worldwide. Why do we work at Agoda? 〰Grab: The leading ride-hailing app in Southeast Asia, also offering food delivery, grocery delivery, and cashless payments. 6000+ employees. 〰FoodPanda: A tech company with a strong presence in Thailand, with over 9000 employees from 50+ countries. They deliver food with authentic recipes from around the world. 〰Lazada: The largest e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia, offering a wide range of products and services. Hot job openings: 🔹Hot analyst jobs (data, marketing, finance, etc.) at Agoda 🔹Business Intelligence-Data Analysis at Lazada 🔹 [Cooperative Internship 2024] Machine Learning Intern, Data Team at Agoda 🔹ManEx Data Visualization - Homecare SEA Intern at Unilever 🔹Sales Operations Analyst at Grab 📍 This list of companies and job openings is not exhaustive. You can search for jobs on company websites and job search websites like LinkedIn Job, JobsDB (these links lead to analyst jobs). P.S. In the photo, I'm working with my laptop on the beach. I do this about once a week. I've noticed that by the sea, I have a high level of concentration, and work hours fly by. There's a canopy for shade, and there are outlets and Wi-Fi near the loungers, although I use mobile internet because it's excellent here.

🧑💻 What laptop should a data analyst choose? This question often comes up in the comments. Let's break it down👇🏻. ⚡️ Can you work on the simplest laptop? In many companies, analysts work with small datasets and perform simple operations, so basic configurations are sufficient. Even if you have a cheap laptop and need more computing power, you can solve this problem with a remote desktop. This allows you to use the computing resources of a remote device while staying on your own. ⚡️ Can you work on a tablet? Even powerful tablets like the Apple iPad Pro are not suitable for data analysis. They do not have enough power and compatibility with the necessary software (Python, Power BI, Tableau, and Excel). ⚡️ What to look for when choosing a laptop? 👉 Processor power. An Intel Core i7 or i9, or an AMD Ryzen 7 or 9, will provide fast data processing and complex computations. 👉 RAM. At least 16 GB of RAM for working with large datasets and multitasking. For more demanding tasks, 32 GB or more is recommended. 👉 Display. High resolution (Full HD or higher) and good color reproduction. For comfortable work, a screen size of 15 to 17 inches is better. 👉 Support for the necessary operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux). For example, the visualization tool Power BI does not have a full version that works on macOS (though this problem can be solved with a virtual machine). When it comes to specific brands, one of the most popular among data analysts is the Apple MacBook Pro (M2). What laptop do you use? And what other factors should be considered when choosing a laptop? ❗️Subscribe: Analytics and growth mindset
