Over the past five years, major VIX spikes above key thresholds have often aligned with local reversals. During the October 10 liquidation event, the normalized Z-score caught the volatility surge that the raw VIX missed due to the stock market being closed. These signals don’t guarantee a recovery, but historically they’ve marked local bottoms, and this could be another one.
