Hi again 👋 Voters in Colorado, Illinois, New York, Oklahoma and Utah will cast their primary ballots today while Mississippi will hold runoff elections. First thing to know: Democrats, who face hurricane-force headwinds in November, have made an unprecedented effort to meddle in GOP contests, elevating extreme candidates and attacking Republican hopefuls they see as threats in the general election. ➡️ Dems made a more-than-$30-million effort in the Illinois governor’s race, blasting GOP candidate Richard Irvin on the airwaves for months. They really don’t want him to face off against Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker in November. ➡️ In Colorado, Democrats launched multi-million-dollar campaigns to boost far-right GOP candidates in three primaries, trying to bolster the reelection prospects of Gov. Jared Polis and Sen. Michael Bennet. Second thing to know: Illinois’ House incumbents are on the chopping block in member-versus-member races: ➡️ In IL-15, GOP Rep. Mary Miller, a Trump-endorsed candidate who has been mired in controversy, will square off against five-term congressman Rep. Rodney Davis. The race is a major test of Trump’s sway — and, given Miller’s various controversies, his judgment. ➡️ In IL-06, redistricting forced Reps. Sean Casten and Marie Newman to battle for the same seat. Campaigning for the seat has essentially stopped, however, after Casten’s 17-year-old died unexpectedly two weeks ago. We’ll be back tonight with an update.
