Christina Kosach survived Auschwitz. She ended up at the extermination with her family and saw her sister and mother-in-law lead to their death. ‘Everybody lined up in front of the crematorium. They counted along the line: burn 5, leave the 6th alive…burn 5, leave the 6th alive,’ her granddaughter told RT Documentary in the film Immortal Letters. Auschwitz was the largest extermination camp run by the Nazis in World War II. According to some estimates, up to four million people died there. In the extermination camp, people were sent to their death in gas chambers; hundreds of thousands were worked to death with little food and clothing in the concentration camp. The word ‘burrnesha’ translates as ‘he-she’. It’s a centuries-old tradition in northern Albania from the medieval canon of laws known as the Kanun. When the male heirs of a family died or were killed, a daughter could assume the role of patriarch by taking a vow of celibacy. So Burrnesha dress and live as men. Nevertheless, Russian researchers have been travelling nearly to the top of the world since 1937 to collect data from the Arctic region. They used to land on an old thick ice floe to live and work on it for almost a year. Then, they slowly drifted across the Arctic ocean. But warmer temperatures mean the ice cover is melting rapidly. So expeditions had to be evacuated after the ice gave way under their drifting stations. They’ve come up with the ‘ship and ice’ polar station when researchers work on the ice but can retreat to the safety of a vessel. We joined an expedition aboard the Akademik Tryoshnikov. Their frozen bodies were found scattered hundreds of metres away from their tents. Undressed, their bodies had broken ribs, fractured skulls, burns and scratches. An investigation concluded the group led by Igor Dyatlov was killed by an ‘overwhelming force’, driving some incredible theories. In 2020, the Prosecutor’s Office said an avalanche led to the deaths.
