In the middle of the AI gold rush, Bandcamp chooses restraint. Music made by machines stays out. AI-generated music is no longer just a concept it’s already around us. Bandcamp’s decision gently reinforces the idea that some spaces still exist primarily for human-made work. Bandcamp has formally introduced a new policy banning music and audio that is wholly or largely generated by AI from being sold on its platform. The announcement was made in a statement titled Keeping the platform Human, where the company said it is “putting human creativity first.” The policy also prohibits the use of AI tools to impersonate other artists or closely mimic their styles, aligning with Bandcamp’s existing rules against impersonation and intellectual property infringement. Content suspected of being AI-generated may be removed, and users are encouraged to report releases that appear to be wholly or substantially created using AI. If AI made it, Bandcamp won’t sell it.
