Do you know what contractions are? English speakers sometime ‘squash’ two words together. When we write these words, we use an apostrophe to show where letters and/or sounds have been ‘squashed out’ of a word. For example, ‘they are’ becomes ‘they’re’. The apostrophe represents the missing ‘a’ from ‘are’. Here are some more contractions for you to learn. Can you spot the double contraction? Does punctuation matter?
