🥳 Are you ready for the Florentine New Year? We don’t mean the December 31st celebrations, but rather one of the official celebrations for the city of Florence, the capital of the Metropolitan City, held on March 25th every year. ⏳ The origin of this particular occasion dates back to the Middle Ages when, March 25th, the day on which the Church celebrates the Annunciation, was chosen by the city to be the start of its civil calendar. 📜 This went on until 1749, when Grand Duke Francis III of Lorraine issued a decree that established January 1st as the start of the civil year for Florence, as in the Gregorian calendar. Each year, the Florentine New Year is celebrated with a rich programme of events. 🏛 At Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Via Cavour, seat of the Metropolitan City of Florence and just a stone’s throw from the Duomo and Piazza San Marco, a conference is being held on March 25th on the imposing major conservation and restoration works for the palazzo façade. The conference will take place in the Sala Carlo VIII from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. 🧭 From 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., there will be guided tours by Firenze Alchemica exploring the Palazzo’s mysteries. Also in the afternoon, there will be a free concert by the Solisti Fiorentini, as part of the chamber music event, “Il Palazzo suona”. 🎭 From 8:30 p.m., step back in time with a theatre performance of “La congiura dei Pazzi” [the Pazzi Conspiracy], organised by the Compagnia delle Seggiole. 🍷 Lastly, from March 26th to 31st, the Ginori Rooms in Palazzo Medici Riccardi will be hosting “Le Buchette raccontano”, an exhibition that takes a look at the history and evolution of Florence’s iconic wine windows.
